The Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Varanasi Through the Eyes of the Legends and the Common Man
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple stands firmly on the west bank of the holy river Ganges for more than hundreds of years. It is situated in Kashi, now the city is called “Varanasi” which was again derived from its older name “Banaras” or “Benares”. The Kashi Vishwanath temple of Varanasi is dedicated to Lord Shiva by the name of Vishwanath or Vishweshwara which denotes to “Ruler of the world”. It is considered to be one of the oldest temples according to Sanatan Dharma and is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. People believe that the jyotirlinga manifested by itself in this holy land. People also call this temple as Vishweshwar Temple or the Golden Temple because of the gold plating over the temple also known as the gold chatra.
