Hear from our seasoned talent acquisition team, Laura Merkle and Katie Burwell, as they share valuable advice from the front line! Use the tips and tricks below to navigate the job landscape and stand out in your next virtual interview.
Preparation: The Key to Success
Test Your Video and Audio in Advance:
Before the interview, make sure your video and audio are working perfectly. Struggling with tech issues can leave a bad impression.
Background:
Blur your background or keep it minimal to avoid distractions. We don’t want the interviewer to object due to a distracting or messy background. You want to focus on you and your experience
Lighting:
Ensure your face is well-lit. Whether you add a lamp or sit by a window, you want to ensure the interviewer can clearly see your face. A camera pointing down can create shadows.
Camera Angle:
Position your camera so your entire face is visible. Avoid showing just half of your face, your forehead, or your chin and nostrils. Recently, we had a candidate stand up on video, and it was incredible—it totally made him stand out!
Sound:
Ensure your sound quality is clear and free from background noise.
Dedicated Time and Space:
Ensure you have a quiet, professional space for your interview. Even if you’re in your car, look professional, blur the background, and find a quiet spot. Don’t drive and interview.
Presentation: Making a Lasting Impression
Dress Appropriately:
Wear blue—it’s said to be the best color for interviews. Avoid T-shirts and/or three-piece suits. Look professional without going overboard, and make sure your clothes fit well.
Research:
Companies want to hire people who are genuinely interested in them. Research the company and explain why you want to work there. Also, look up your interviewers on LinkedIn to find common ground or learn about their professional history.
Active Listening:
Communicate clearly and concisely and provide specific examples. Really listen to each question and be concise. Nervousness can lead to over-talking or not listening properly.
Participation: Engaging Effectively
Dynamic Personality:
Bring energy and relatability to the conversation. We are looking for dynamic and energetic colleagues, not just a recitation of your resume.
Ask Questions:
Have at least three questions prepared. Show the research you’ve done on the company and interviewer. For example: Ask about new leadership, stock prices, or acquisitions. Share knowledge about the interviewer, such as their previous company and how it compares to the current one.
Follow Up:
Send a quick thank-you email or a follow-up video. It doesn’t need to be elaborate—share your enthusiasm for the role and mention something you learned during the interview.
Use of AI:
While tools like ChatGPT and Copilot are valuable, if you use them to write a thank-you note, edit it before sending it off.
Perceptiveness: Understanding the Nuances
