As we all know, having a solid content strategy is key for organic growth. A huge part of this content strategy is not just to embed high level keywords in your website copy, but to create new copy.
If you don’t already have one, make sure your company has a blog. You can use this blog to leverage trending topics, new keywords, and industry-specific keywords to help you rank higher and have relevant content to pull users to your site.
In any content strategy, the end goal is to have quality content. What is quality content?
In the SEO world, quality content is comprised of:
- Compelling topic or copy
- Images
Tip: Don’t forget that your images can also have keywords. When you save an image, or rename an image, make sure to have your keywords in the title. This will help you increase visibility for both standard and image search on Google.
So what does this have to do with Google Trends?
Google Trends gives you the most popular topics and keywords on the Internet. They are all relative, they don’t compete with other terms, and they only compete against themselves. This means that you can adapt your ongoing copy (e.g., blog) to capitalize on the trending topics and integrate associated keywords.
Let me illustrate this tactic:
Suppose I am a cosmetics manufacturer, looking to bring in traffic.
I have three high performing keywords I would like to target:
- Makeup Beauty
- Products
- Skin Cream
I then pull up Google Trends and find the top terms of the day.
As you can see from the above image, there are no trending topics or keywords that are closely related to the ones I want to target. This is where you need to get creative.
Find ANY Similarity
In this case, you may have to be flexible. I would go with “The Voice” first to connect to my keywords.
“Makeup Tips from The Voice” – pull images and write about what styles of makeup they use on their contestants and judges.
Make it Newsworthy
Though the “Mega Millions” doesn’t really relate to my keywords, it is newsworthy. Piggyback on it’s news appeal and convert it for your purposes.
“Beauty Products I could buy if I won Mega Millions” – find the most expensive beauty products, makeup and skin creams on the market and do a write up.
Though this trick should not represent your whole strategy, it is a nice, easy and quick way to create content that is trending and brings users to your site.
