This new Google update was announced in several of Google’s social media channels, one of them Google+. The main purpose with this new Google algorithm update is to penalize mobile sites with big pop-ups promoting their own app while hiding a significant amount of the page content until you close the add.
As I’ve suspected since before, this update will simply be added to Google’s mobile-friendly-algorithm, and therefore be one of the main criteria for a site’s mobile ranking. With this new update, one thing has been confirmed: Mobilegeddon is more than a one-timer. So keep on optimizing for mobile SEO – and rather walk the long way than taking shortcuts.
So for those of you wondering how to promote your app, on your website, without risking a ranking decrease, this is Google’s advice:
“Instead of full page interstitials, we recommend that webmasters use more user-friendly formats such as app install banners. We hope that this change will make it easier for searchers to see the content of the pages they are looking for.”By following Google’s simple advice and guidelines, your site’s ranking and mobile-friendliness won’t be effected.
In addition to what was announced November 2nd, keep of optimizing your website for all mobile criteria. This can either be accomplished using the Google Mobile Friendly Test tool – or even easier, Rank Ranger’s On-Page & Mobile Friendly Optimization tool.
