There have been more and more apps sharing content from personal facebook profiles without explicit action required, creating a more crowded News Feed and often surprising users by the content that they have shared. Now, facebook is taking action (by tweaking their algorithm) and cutting down on the number of these posts that will appear in your News Feed.
According to facebook’s official post: “We’ve found that stories people choose to explicitly share from third party apps are typically more interesting and get more engagement in News Feed than stories shared from third party apps without explicit action. We’ve also heard that people often feel surprised or confused by stories that are shared without taking an explicit action. In the coming months, we will continue to prioritize explicitly shared stories from apps in News Feed over implicitly shared stories.”
This is an important update for app developers to note, it means that they should be including more share buttons in their apps, rather than allowing the app to automatically share a post once the user has signed up.
This could also cut down on many spammy posts where users click to “read” an article, and it immediately shares on their profile without warning. Additionally posts from gaming apps should be reduced in this new algorithm.
Overall this is a positive update that will create more meaningful and interesting content being seen on the average News Feed, ultimately makes facebook users happier, which is what the social network is supposed to be all about.
