A day in the life of: A Senior SEO Executive – Builtvisible


What first attracted you to Builtvisible?

For me, it was the opportunity to learn and develop my technical knowledge. I was originally shown the Builtvisible website by a recruiter and was instantly impressed by what I read in the blogs, guides, and case studies. After reading more about Career Architect and how committed the business is to staff development, I decided this would be the perfect place for me to become better at SEO, and so I put in my application. This was further backed up during my interview where I was blown away by the technical knowledge of the interviewers, as well as the detailed feedback they gave me on a task I had completed as part of the interview process.

How would you describe the Builtvisible culture?

Committed to the work. Everyone here genuinely cares about the quality of the service we’re providing to clients. This makes the culture feel incredibly collaborative as we’re all ultimately working towards the same goal of improving the SEO performance of our clients’ websites. Although the standard of work is high, it also feels very supportive as we all help each other reach those standards with open and honest feedback.

What are your favourite Builtvisible perks?

Career Architect has been an excellent tool for helping me understand what areas I need to work on to progress further in my career. Setting out specific goals and then using the wealth of training resources available has made me feel like I’ve already developed my knowledge significantly despite only being here for 6 months!

I also really enjoy the hybrid and flexible working environment. Feeling like the business trusts me to complete projects whilst working to my own schedule really helps maintain a great work-life balance.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I’m not sure if there is a ‘typical day’, as the work is so varied, but it usually revolves around finding new opportunities to improve clients’ SEO performance. One example of this would be carrying out keyword research to find new ways to position or structure areas of the website to better target what users are searching for. It could also be performing competitor analysis to figure out what the client needs to do to better compete for markets they’re already ranking in. Or it may be technical auditing to find any tech-related issues on the website which are holding back performance, and then raising tickets to get these resolved. Two days are rarely the same, so it’s always interesting to see what projects I’ll be getting involved with.

What would you look for in a new team member if you were hiring?

The three main things in my opinion would be: willingness to learn, proactiveness, and pride in the quality of work you produce. There are loads of opportunity to grow at Builtvisible and lots of incredibly knowledgeable people who are eager to help you develop. Having the right attitude of wanting to improve and produce your best work gets noticed here and helps you make the most of what’s available.

What’s the most exciting product or project you’re working on at the moment?

I mostly work on a large ecommerce project for a client who has been with Builtvisible for a long time. There is lots going on with the account including a huge upcoming website migration, as well as a project to increase their visibility in Ireland. The client is great to work with and is eager to use the new website as an opportunity to implement as many of the technical recommendations we’ve made as possible. This has made it a fun and engaging project to be involved with, especially so early on in my time at Builtvisible.

What has your training and development looked like?

Development at Builtvisible centres around Career Architect, which is a great framework for setting clear goals and then putting together a strategy to achieve them. For me this has involved things like getting involved in the marketing activity for the agency, as well as working on my technical knowledge.

This is supported by the huge number of resources and process documentation that Builtvisible have built up on their internal database, as well as excellent support from the senior members of the team.

Do you feel supported by the business?

100%. The business does a lot to ensure the culture is supportive and you’re encouraged to try things and make mistakes. The open and honest feedback processes from senior members of the team then helps to ensure you can use any mistakes as an opportunity to learn and get the work up to the correct standard before it goes out to the client.

The business also provides things like regular wellbeing seminars and free mental health support if you need it, so it really feels like the business genuinely cares and wants you to succeed.

What are your hopes for the department and agency for the year ahead and future?

I’ve been so impressed by the quality of the work produced here since I joined, so it’d be amazing to see the agency take on more clients and be more visible within the industry. I know there’s been a lot of work this year from senior leadership to define who we are as an organisation and the message we want to send out, so I’m excited to see this go live!

How would you describe your job to others in general, and to people who aren’t even in digital marketing?

I always struggle with this and usually end up describing some strange, convoluted hypothetical about helping a business sell more teapots on their website. I’ll avoid going into this and just say I help businesses optimise their website to increase the number of potential customers finding them when searching online for relevant products/services.

How would you describe your client relationships?

I’ve been very lucky to have been involved with one of Builtvisible’s longest standing accounts since I joined, and the client is an absolute joy to work with. They clearly have a lot of trust in the agency and they’re also incredibly engaged and keen to push any optimisations they can off the back of our recommendations. Communication is always prompt and I genuinely look forward to our regular catchups. They can also put away an impressive amount of mezcal when the occasion arises.

Lastly, what’s your proudest client moment to ****?

Proudest moment is being nominated for the star player of the month award twice within my first three months at Builtvisible. The team has been incredibly welcoming since I joined and it’s amazing to be part of a business where you feel like your hard work is immediately recognised.
